SIX NATIONS, ON – November 9, 2020 – Wi-Fi Towers provide wireless connections to the Internet in areas where wired internet connections are not readily available. The present internet coverage in Six Nations does not currently meet the needs of the community, as well the existing towers no longer meet Canadian Standards Association (CSA Standards).

Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council (SNGREC), in partnership with Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation (SNGRDC) have entered into an arrangement with Xplornet Communications to invest in a project to replace and build all new internet towers (“the project”). As part of the project, Xplornet has committed to a significant investment in new technology to enhance internet service and reliability.

The project will involve A6N Utilities undertaking the replacement of existing internet towers, and building three new towers on ‘Sixty-Nine Corners”, “Stone Ridge”, and “Beavers Corner”. Internet service reliability and performance will be greatly enhanced with dedicated, licensed technology enhancing the Wi-Fi Coverage from 68% to 98%.

The enhanced service and performance will assist our Six Nations Learners and Workers currently learning and/or working from home during the COVID pandemic. Virtual Community Information Sessions are set to take place later this month, with the first session on Monday November 30 from 9:00AM and 10:00AM.

The first stage of construction towards the Tower Internet Project will be to begin with a geotechnical investigation by conducting core sampling at the tower site locations, which is set to begin on Thursday November 12, 2020.

Funding for the Internet Tower Project has been secured from the Six Nations of the Grand River Economic Development Trust Fund and Two Rivers CDC.
